With just a kind gesture, you can plant a smile into others. :)

I went for a volunteering activity few weeks ago. And I just had the "AHA!" moment after the activity and I think it's worth to blog about it. (At least I think it's worth it.. :P)

To get the story moving, basically, we're involved in a family-based event. The VHO organized a family bonding session where families will be playing "amazing race" kind of games. Basically, all the family will be assigned 10 location at Chinatown area. Their mission is to go to the location assigned to them and complete the task allocated to them at each station.

As for Volunteers, we were required to arrive at the location 8 a.m in the morning. Since I had to attend two weddings the night before (one of it is at S'pore and another one is at JB). It's really been a tiring day for me on Sat and having to wake up so early in Sunday morning is almost 要我的命.. (Ok... I might be too 夸张 here... :P) But I definitely won't over estimate my stamina next time round... :P

I arrived at the event location and met with my fellow team members (we're allocated into different teams with different task)... And most of my team are aunties (only 4 out of 12 are consider youngster... When I said "youngster", I mean below 30 Yrs Old... :P). But believe it or not, those aunties were even more energetic then us! I mean, I was yawning all my way there and looking at those energetic aunties just make me feel I'm older than them! Geez~~

So let's make the story short. The role assigned to our team is "Motivator". Basically what we need to do is to just "Motivate" those families along their way. As for myself, I was assigned as "Motivator" + Traffic Controller. So basically I've to make sure the safety of the family who is "jay walking". Hence, I've been assigned to a street junction and I've to stay at the same spot from 10am - 1pm.

As I did not have any prior experience doing the "Motivator" role, I'm not really sure what to say to the participant when they walk pass around my area. When I was in the briefing, the staff told us that as a "Motivator", our role is very important as we're the one that going to motivate the participant to keep on going. And all we have to say is 加油!快到了!

To be honest, my first thought that pass my mind when I was assigned to the role is "harr... like that only har...". Well because I was looking forward to be assigned to a more "challenging" job like game marshals. And when our expectation is not met, we tend to be disappointed.

Well... Putting aside all that, on the event day itself, there I was standing at the junction and waiting for the arrival of the first family. From far away, I saw a group of family approaching, I was a bit nervous as I don't know what to say to them. When they saw me, they're so excited and ask me for the direction to their next station. After I explain to them and as they walked, I shout out "加油!!" to the family. And man... The smile on the families when they said "谢谢!" to me is just priceless!

There are different kind of families that I met along the journey. Some of them are really excited to complete their task, some of them are taking their time, some of them are tired and some of them are complaining about the route.

And all I can do is just said:

加油啊!

快到了!

你看。。就在那边!

你们要到第几个站啦? 哇!已经第六个站啦?!好厉害哦!

加油!!多几个站而已就能完成了!!

And when those families heard those encouragement words, they somehow feel more energetic. It's like there's some power in those words that can push them forward and keep on keeping on.

Well.. Now I think back... Isn't this what life is all about? When people cross with our path, some of them are really excited about their life, some are taking it slow to enjoy their life, some are tired and stress out about their life, and some are complaining to you about their life.

And the least we can do for them is to speak the word of encouragement. Even when they complain to you, all you need to do is to just stretch out your ear and listen. Those words of encouragement might not change their life. As in the game itself, my words of encouragement does not change the outcome of the game. The outcome is still depends on the family themselves. My word is just simply giving them a slight push when they thought of giving up.

Isn't it wonderful that when you thought things are not going well and when you're in the brink of giving up, there's someone there to tell you that it's ok! Keep on keeping on! 加油!快到了!The rest of the road, it still depends on themselves. But let's be this small hands to push people on, to encourage them when they're about to give up. Let's plant a smile on someone's face today. Just by a simple words, a kind gesture, we can make this world a better place. Why not?

Let's File A Compliment

If you've been stayin in Singapore long enough, the word "complain" won't be a stranger to you. Why? Simply bcos people here looveee to complain.

Hot weather, complain.
Heavy rain, complain.
Public Transport Fees increase, complain.
Flood, complain.
Expensive medical fees, complain.
Bad service, complain.

Well... I'm not against it. Having a feedback is good. Be it good or bad feedback, it gave the person a certain "push" to be better.

I've been listening to Class 95FM recently. And they have this session called "thumbs up" which they'll give a "thumbs up" for a person who gave a great service or even make the DJ feel good.

I personally think that this is a great exercise. If by our simple act or reaction we'll be able to make another person happy or feel good, why not?

Few days ago, I make a call to DHL Service Hotline inquiring about my undelivered package. Well... accroding to my previous experience, when you make a call to a Service Hotline, let's expect to wait at least 5 mins or worse 30 mins before someone attend to you.

So I press the number for DHL Service Hotline and took a sip of my water. I almost choked when my call was answered before the caller ringtone rang for the second time. And a super nice and kind gentlemen attended to me (he even asked me "how do you do?"! Well, I dont know about you, but I've never come across a Service Hotline Personnel asked me how am I doing while they were checking their records!). And all I could say is the Service Hotline Personnel have one of a hell great service attitude! When I put down my phone, I'm just simply amazed by his service attitude.

I read in a book before that you can boost someone confidence or make them feel good by providing a simple compliment to them! So I decided to take 5 mins of my time, go to DHL website and write a compliment about this gentlemen. Here's what I write:

And to my surprise, I received a reply in less than 1 hr from their Customer Care Executive:

And in another 1 hr, I received a call from one of their Customer Care Manager inquiring about which number did I call from as they need to pull out the records and track down the Personnel who attended to me. And in the end of his call, he ensure me that they will make sure that the Personnel will receive the compliment.

I don't know about you but I feel great after I put down my phone cos I know that just by spending 5 mins of my time and write in a compliment and not a complain, I've given a boost or confidence to that gentlemen. And most of all, I myself was feeling really great for the whole day!

Sometime when we receive a good service, we will take it for granted. "It's their line of job what... It's their job to give a good service to us!" you might say. But well, let's learn to be appreciative towards anyone who gives us a good service. Learn to smile to the person who attend to you. Be it a sale person or even the McDonald auntie you come across. You don't know that your simple smile can just make their day and make their job easier and enjoyable! And believe me, you'll feel great yourself too! :)

2011

Heya~~ Been long time since last update... Let's see what's happening lately... Hmm.. O yeah... It's 2011 now!! Wheeeee~~~~ (Ok... I know it's too late since it's March already... :P)

First up~~ Lemme come out with the list of happenings that happened to me (seriously?" Happenings that happened to me"? Well... Whatever~~~):

1. Let's skip the job changing part. It's good, it's great, it's never been better!! (If you knew what I mean...)

2. I changed my phone to Blackberry (sponsored by my dad) who always "call failed" on me once it reached 20 secs of outgoing call... So if you called me and I hanged up on you suddenly, it's NOT my fault!! :P

3. Went to Orchard (again) for Christmas celebration... Three words... PACKED LIKE SARDINE!! But nevertheless, we enjoyed our time there... Although I regret that I din stay till 12 midnight (my bro said that ppl jus went crazy and start spraying one another... I wanna do that nxt year!! ngiak.. ngiak... ngiak...)

4. Counting down at Marina Square... We din make it last year cos we got scared lookin at the crowds!! Waited n squeezes with people for 10 mins firework show... Ok... Next!

5. Hmm... I get to see and shake hands with S.H.E!! (I q-ed for 2 long hours for that!!) Prayin for speedy recovery for Selina... Get well soon~~~

6. Er.... As I write this blog, my Ipod seems to start dying on me.... Since few days ago, it starts taking its own sweet time loading games and music (read: Lag to the max!)... Come on!! Don't die on me!!! *performin CPR while thinking that there's IT Show coming up tomorrow*

7. My weighting machine seems to be working normally (since it's displaying the figures that I'm satisfied with! :P) But why is it look totally different with my tummy? Sigh~~ Time to work it out!!

8. Last Month, I discovered a way to spend my weekend except caging myself at home with loads and loads of dramas or expensive food spread. Since last month, I've been filling up my weekend with volunteering activities! Trust me... It's a great way to spend your weekend without spending much money and you'll discover different things that you'll never experience by sitting in the office from 9 to 6pm 5 days a week! (For those interested, log on to www.sgcares.org)

Well... I'm not someone who think far... At least not for now, cos I totally don't have whatsoever imagination of what I'll be in the next five yrs. So let's plan ahead for this year first! Here's my plan for 2011:

1. I'm gonna lodge a visa application for working holiday at Australia. Finger cross that I'll get it!!

2. If the above didn't get through successfully, I think I'll just make do with backpacking...

That's all for 2011!! Life is good! Life is great! Let's do something crazy abt it! :)

Ok... I seriously do not know what I've been blabbering about... Time to log off! Ciao!!
